About Debra
Founder. Speaker. Chaplain.
Debra Carter is the founder of Pure Ensight Advisory LLC — a communication culture infrastructure firm built at the intersection of how people communicate and how people grieve.
A prayer answered. A journey begun.
I am a mother who asked God for a child to love. In 1980, that prayer was answered.
What I could not know was that the answer to one prayer would become the beginning of a journey that would require every ounce of faith, strength, and love I possessed — and then ask for more. My son was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Disease at age three, and nothing in my life was ever quite the same again.
For years I learned the language of his disease the way a soldier learns the terrain of a battlefield — not because I wanted to, but because survival required it. And when the medicine meant to manage one illness opened the door to another, I found myself standing at the intersection of two crises at once, loving my child through the unimaginable.
"My son is 32 years old. He is still here. That is not a small thing. That is the whole thing."
Somewhere between the hospital waiting rooms and the midnight prayers, I walked into a self-development workshop — exhausted, carrying years of grief I had never named. I left a different woman than the one who walked in.
Emotional intelligence became not just a concept but a lifeline. I became a workshop facilitator to bring into rooms what had been brought into mine. The more I sat with people in their stories — witnessing grief that had never been honored, loss buried beneath productivity and the relentless pressure to be fine — the more I was called toward the sacred work of presence.
I pursued chaplaincy: sitting with human beings in their most tender moments. Not to fix. Not to rush anyone toward healing on a schedule that makes others comfortable. To be present. To bear witness. From chaplaincy, my path led to end of life grief education — becoming a student of dying so I could become a better servant of the living.
May 3rd, 2014 — Unity Temple on the Plaza, Kansas City
I stood on stage as a cast member of Listen to Your Mother and told my son's story out loud for the first time. I learned that day the truth I now build my entire life's work around:
"The story you are most afraid to tell is the one someone else most needs to hear."
Today, as Founder of Pure Ensight Advisory LLC, my work lives at the intersection of how people communicate and how people grieve — because I know from the inside of my own life that you cannot fully separate the two. I bring to every room what no degree can confer: the lived experience of loving someone through the unimaginable, and finding, on the other side, a mission to make sure no one carries the weight of grief, pain, or unspoken truth in silence.
I am Debra Carter. I live this beautiful painful life. And I am blessed.

The Four Principles That Guide Everything We Do
Clarity
We believe clear communication is an act of respect. We help leaders say what they mean — with precision, empathy, and purpose.
Compassion
Human beings are at the center of every organization. We design communication approaches that honor the full humanity of every person in the room.
Courage
Transformational communication requires the courage to be honest, vulnerable, and direct — even when it's uncomfortable.
Infrastructure
We don't offer quick fixes. We build lasting systems — communication frameworks that become embedded in how your organization thinks, speaks, and leads.
"To transform communication into leadership infrastructure that strengthens organizational culture, emotional resilience, compassionate leadership, and human connection."
